I awoke this morning to a pool of bloody discharge on my duvet and splattered blood marks on our bed throw. Following the trail down with horror to find my dog Merlin, sat in his comfy bed at the bottom of mine.
Naturally, I am a human and my first reaction is to think the worst possible outcome “that I’m going to lose him” and panic tries to take a grip.
However, I am also an Animal Healer and so my intuition awakens me to realise that Merlin looks bright eyed and calm and in no obvious pain. He does have blood on him. There is no clear sign where it has come from but my feeling is that it’s from penile discharge.
The big C word throws a heaving body punch to my otherwise calming mind scape. Its such a lurking worry to our modern minds.
I smile at Merlin, reassure his big eyed gaze that all is well. Finish my examination and then book a vets appointment so that I have this as back up.
My next search for answers takes me back to the bed sheets. The thing with blood and paranoia is that it can appear more in quantity than it actually is. Blood is such an evocative image to see and fills me with thoughts of terror. Think gory movies, Game of Thrones (which we’ve watched recently), vampires, violence and emergency. I realise that the blood is on the surface of the bedding and due to the clear discharge it has covered a larger surface area which means it is not the soaking pool that I had first “seen”.
Blood is a pulsing paradox, when contained within our bodies it means life force, circulation of nutrients, flow, information. But if it escapes it congeals into a dark haunting symbol of death. Denying blood it’s further gift and meanings of cleansing and purging. However galling it may first appear.
Now I go to my first aid kit of plant remedies. And I ask Merlin what he needs. From my examination of his body I felt that his stomach was tighter than normal. So after the obvious selection of Sandalwood (for urinary infection) I go to my gastrointestinal oils.
Indeed… Merlin, selects Garlic above all the other oils. Antibacterial, antiviral, gut bacteria, immune stimulant, parasites. It pretty much covers the mix.
The vapour from Garlic oil causes a hostile environment for the bacteria. Not needing the garlic myself, I did need to keep my distance as the smell is SO pungent. Merlin stayed with this oil for a long time, showing the signs he was working with it and he drooped his eyes into deep rest.
I left him with Garlic and Peppermint and Carrot Seed to enhance the effects.
Once he had taken his dose, some 20 minutes later, he got up and moved and seemed happy in himself. Tail wagging.
I cancelled the vet appointment. I want to try the plant remedies for 24/48 hours before considering arranging another vet appointment. This is because he is well in himself. There are no more signs of blood and he is indicating from the oil selection that it is an infection. I would prefer to treat him naturally for this rather than dose him with antibiotics from the vet which will likely mess with his gut flora and long-term further deplete his immune responses. However, if he was in obvious pain and discomfort and if I thought it was an emergency I would definitely take the antibiotic route.
It’s not an easy position being a Healer and following a natural path with your animal, as what if it was an emergency situation. and you get things wrong? It takes great courage and trust in your own groundedness to make these decisions. It has taken me years of meditation and practice to really tune into my intuition. I am so grateful to plant remedies and to my teacher Caroline Ingraham to have this toolkit at my disposal. Empowering my animal to heal himself. And to my Inka Healing and Reiki teachers for helping me to embody my intuitive healing craft deep within myself. To be able to see clearly and part the muffling clouds of anxiety.
I will be giving Merlin’s Holistic Vet a call soon to discuss some homeopathic remedies for reccuring infection and lowered immunity as bless him, Merlin is a sensitive little boy and does have recurring instances of infection and gastrointestinal imbalance. And to discuss anything unforeseen. Perhaps have his prostate checked as a precaution.
Wish him well quickly my friends and fellow healers.
Love us two, Nicky and Merlin xx
Update on Merlin. 18/08/19
Thank you for all your loving messages and healing thoughts. 🙏
There has been no further sign of blood since yesterday morning. And after dosing him every 4 hours on plant remedies, this morning he has indicated he no longer needs them. (apart from Melissa for a longstanding fungal infection which recurs from time to time).
I am overjoyed. Now he is ready to visit the vet. Because there will no longer be a need for antibiotics and I'll only be going to get his prostate examined and rule out the big C because this is just a sensible thing to do even though I know that this whole bloody episode has been due to a bacterial infection as this is what his plant selection told me.
He showed me what is wrong. How amazing is that?! Giving back our animals the ability to self-heal. It's why I'm so passionate about what I facilitate with the healing natural remedies 💕
As my journey with plant remedies continues I am fascinated with the questions that have come up. For instance, can anxiety be caused by allergic reactions in your body? Rather than the other way around?
It's likely a two-way street.. However, I know that if my immune system is depleted and my body is constantly over reacting to invaders it is going to make me feel on edge and reactive too.
Treating my allergies with German chamomile has helped alleviate anxiety that was pulsing in and out of my body.
Now think about your animals? Any reactive behaviours? Whining? Barking? Pop me a line if you'd like to explore plant remedies and self-selection 💕
Tips for Self-Selection
01 : Does it smell good to you?
02 : Do you want to smell it more?
03 : Keep inhaling until the smell loses its attraction
04 : Apply topically if you really need more
